Department of Pathobiology

Ronald N. Harty, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Pathobiology and head of the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases & Immunology at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Harty is also the co-founder of Intervir Therapeutics, a start-up company focused on novel drug discovery to treat viral diseases. Harty received his Ph.D. in virology from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. He then completed postdoctoral training at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Harty’s laboratory focuses on virus-host interactions that regulate virus assembly and budding. In addition to their interest in understanding how viral matrix proteins interact with host proteins to facilitate the budding process, they are also interested in the host innate immune response to virus infection, and in identifying host-oriented antivirals that can inhibit egress and spread of RNA viruses such as Ebola, Marburg and Lassa fever.
